The Inheritance Games — Jennifer Lynn Barnes
“You were an escape room game master Kerstin! You would love this book!”
“You love Knives Out!, Kerstin! You would love this book!”
“You hate people, Kerstin! You would love this book!”
I finally caved and read The Inheritance Games, and I kid you not, this book sucked me in from the first page. It is the closest I have seen to info-dumping perfection, where, even though I had no idea who Avery Grambs was and what was going on at the beginning, I was immediately immersed in her world. Info was unloaded naturally and in an interesting way. This made it easy to just start and never stop.
The central mystery, which is shrouded in many mysteries, stayed intriguing throughout the book. I felt trapped with Avery in that mansion, completely suspicious of everyone, and the suspense did not let up. There are so many puzzles within puzzles, and I read so fast, I’m pretty sure smoke came out of my eyeballs. Tobias Hawthorne must have had so much time on his hands.
There is an ever-present love triangle that isn’t really my thing (read: is really not my thing), but this is 100% personal preference (and 100% skimmable if it’s not your thing either). I skipped all the swoons, weak knees, and thin white t-shirts and it was fine.
